From Lifeline to PCCS
During 2017 we wrote to all our supporters and other stakeholders to inform them that we would be changing our name to Pregnancy Counselling & Care (Scotland). A change of name takes a lot of time and effort and we are gradually updating all our promotional material, signage, website, facebook page, bank accounts and so on to reflect our new identity.
Lifeline changed its name in the 1990s to Lifeline Pregnancy Counselling & Care to reflect more clearly what we do. More recently we have found that major trusts are unwilling to give funds to any charity which may take a pro-life stance and the use of the word “life” clearly gave that impression, despite our clear declaration that our counselling is independent and impartial. Our charity cannot survive without these trust funds and the decision was made to drop ‘Lifeline’ from the name in order to increase the chances of applications for funding being successful.
As you all know, along with other charities we have been struggling financially and simply cannot survive beyond the next few months if we do not increase our income. We are so grateful for all the help you give us, both financial and material, and depend on your continued support to enable us to help the most vulnerable people who turn to us for aid. If you could help us by holding a fundraising event it would be greatly appreciated. Any donation, however small, helps and a regular amount paid by direct debit helps us to plan and budget more effectively.
Our shop in Gorgie Road continues to provide the majority of our income. Donations of any saleable items are welcome. If you have any furniture you no longer need, provided it meets current safety standards, we would be able to collect it from you. Please telephone the shop 0131 346 7295 to arrange a pick up.
The Support We Provided In 2017
Half of mothers suffer mental health issues associated with pregnancy or childbirth and half of those mothers hide these issues from family and friends. We provide a safe space for them to talk through their issues and to receive the help they need.
We provided free counselling, with no time or number of sessions limit, to help individuals and families through miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, termination, postnatal depression and other related matters.
What our clients have said about our counselling
“It was invaluable and life-changing.”
“Counselling gave me strength in the toughest months of my life.”
“Counselling from PCCS saved my life time and time again. I have grown immeasurably as a person and I have learnt so much that I will treasure for the rest of my life, all as a direct result of having accessed counselling through PCCS.”
“As a man it was quite a hurdle to admit to myself that I needed counselling. My apprehension dissolved as soon as I crossed the threshold and I am glad that I did.”
We provided baby and toddler help packs containing whatever the family needs; clothing, nappies, cots, bedding, bottles, stairgates and so on.
At Christmas we provided families with presents to ensure their day was special. These packs include presents for the child and for any older siblings plus a little something for the mother.
What our clients and their representatives have said about our material aid service
“PCCS gives people joy, hope, puts a smile in people’s life.”
“My daughter has all those things which other children have because of PCCS.”
“It is difficult to express in words the look on my client’s face when I gave her all the baby things you had supplied. She was completely overwhelmed. Her little boy was able to come home as she had the necessary things to care for him properly. I know this may have had very different outcomes had your service not been so generous.”
“The client burst into tears. Loved the knitted items.”
Thank You Celia
Celia O’Donnell retired last year after over 20 years of working with PCCS (and Lifeline). During this time she has been a volunteer, a paid worker and a skilled listener. She was the backbone of our charity over so many years and in good times and troubled times Celia was there supporting staff, volunteers and clients with her boundless enthusiasm and energy. At the reception desk she was the main point of contact for people phoning or coming into the office requiring help. Her friendly, caring concern for everyone mixed with compassion reflected all that was good about our charity and for many she was Lifeline. She was the trusted link for so many of our clients and we will always be grateful for all that she has done for those who turn to us for help. Celia decided to retire to explore pastures new with husband, John, another tireless worker and ambassador for PCCS. We greatly appreciate their continued help and support and wish them both many years of fun and happiness as they enjoy their next adventure.
